Why 1200 × 675?

16:9 at 1200 x 675 is a practical landscape canvas for X posts, and it has the same proportions as most screenshots, video frames and slide exports, so a 1920 × 1080 or 1600 × 900 file simply scales down to 1200 × 675 with nothing trimmed. Because the frame is wider than it is tall, this page opens on Crop to fill, and that costs the most on phone photos. A 4032 × 3024 landscape shot is scaled to 1200 × 900 and loses about 112 pixels from the top and the same from the bottom, keeping three quarters of its height. A 1080 × 1080 square is enlarged slightly to 1200 × 1200 and gives up about 262 pixels above and below, so only the middle 56 per cent survives. A 3024 × 4032 portrait photo keeps just the central 42 per cent of its height.

Before you upload

A taller image is cropped to roughly 16:9 in the timeline preview, so anything critical should sit inside that shape. X developer documentation lists JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP as accepted image types, caps a still image at 5 MB and allows up to four photos in one post. A 1200 × 675 JPG at the default quality of 82 sits far below that cap, and PNG is the better pick for a screenshot full of small text. A tall app screenshot, around 1170 × 2532, fits this frame worst: Crop to fill keeps only a slice about 658 pixels high from its middle, while Fit whole image shrinks it to roughly 312 × 675 with bands about 444 pixels wide on either side in the background colour, white unless you change it. Cropping such a screenshot to the part that matters first usually reads better. The result is always a still image, so an animated GIF cannot be prepared here, and GIF files are not accepted as input. post.png downloads as post-social.jpg while JPG is selected.

Source and verification

X accepts several image shapes; 1200 by 675 is a practical 16:9 timeline canvas, not a hard upload requirement. Check the X Help Center guidance ↗.

Frequently asked questions

What size is x post image?

1200 × 675 pixels, an aspect ratio of 16:9. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.

What aspect ratio is x post image?

16:9. It is landscape, so this page starts on Crop to fill, which trims the top and bottom of a taller-shaped original; Fit whole image keeps all of it and pads the sides. Crops are always taken from the centre.

Which file format should I use for an image posted to X?

JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
