Why 1080 × 1350?
1080 x 1350 is a practical 4:5 portrait working canvas. The linked Instagram Help page supports the 1080-pixel width, but it does not prescribe this exact height as a fixed upload requirement. Phone cameras usually shoot at 3:4, which is only slightly taller than 4:5, so the choice of fit matters less here than on most sizes. With Crop to fill, a 3024 × 4032 phone photo is scaled to 1080 × 1440 and loses just 45 pixels from the top and 45 from the bottom, about 6 per cent of its height. This page opens with Fit whole image instead, which keeps every pixel but shrinks that photo to about 1013 × 1350 and adds a strip of background colour roughly 34 pixels wide down each side.
