Why 1080 × 1080?
Instagram's help centre says photos are shared at up to 1080 pixels wide. A wider upload is sized down to 1080, one narrower than 320 is enlarged to 320, and anything in between keeps its resolution as long as its shape lies between 1.91:1 landscape and 3:4 portrait, which at 1080 wide means a height from 566 to 1440 pixels. A 1080 x 1080 square sits inside that range, so Instagram does not need to crop or resize it again. The page opens on Fit whole image because the frame is square. A 4032 × 3024 phone photo shrinks to 1080 × 810 with bands of 135 pixels above and below; switch to Crop to fill and it becomes 1440 × 1080 with 180 pixels trimmed from each side instead.
Before you upload
Instagram re-compresses uploads, so upload a clean JPG at high quality rather than a file you have already compressed heavily. Raising Quality from the default 82 to around 90 gives that second compression a cleaner starting point. A square no longer matches the profile grid exactly: since Instagram moved to taller 3:4 tiles in January 2025, each square shows there as a centred slice about 810 pixels wide, with roughly 135 pixels hidden at each side until someone opens the post. Keep names and logos away from the left and right edges. A 4:5 portrait at 1080 × 1350 is also within the supported range and uses more of the feed; squeezed into this square with Fit whole image it becomes 864 × 1080 with 108-pixel side bands, so use the Instagram portrait size for those photos. A 1920 × 1080 video frame keeps only its middle 1080 pixels across under Crop to fill. photo.webp downloads as photo-social.jpg while JPG is selected.
