Why 1500 × 500?
The profile header is a wide 3:1 banner at 1500 x 500. Matching it exactly keeps text crisp rather than stretched. Almost no camera shoots at 3:1, so this page opens with Crop to fill, and what survives is a thin horizontal slice. A 4032 × 3024 landscape phone photo is scaled to 1500 × 1125 and loses about 312 pixels from the top and the same from the bottom, keeping only the middle 44 per cent of its height. A 16:9 screenshot or video frame at 1920 × 1080 fares better: it becomes about 1500 × 844 and gives up roughly 172 pixels above and below. A portrait phone photo keeps just a quarter of its height, the band through its middle, so a face near the top of the frame is usually cut off.
Before you upload
The profile picture overlaps the lower left of the header, so avoid placing anything important there. The crop on this page is always taken from the exact centre, with no way to slide it up, down or sideways, so a subject that sits low or to the left of the original stays low or left in the header, right where the avatar lands. Crop the original first with the crop tool if the important part is off-centre. Fit whole image avoids cutting anything but suits a 3:1 frame poorly: the same 16:9 frame shrinks to about 889 × 500, with bands roughly 306 pixels wide down each side filled with the background colour. Small sources are enlarged without any warning, so an image under 1000 pixels wide is stretched at least 1.5 times and looks soft; start from the largest copy you have. A file named header.png downloads as header-social.jpg while JPG is selected, and the result line confirms 1500 × 500 px alongside the file size.
Source and verification
X explicitly recommends 1500 by 500 pixels for profile header images and warns that edges can crop. Check the X Help Center guidance ↗.

Frequently asked questions
What size is x header?
1500 × 500 pixels, an aspect ratio of 3:1. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.
What aspect ratio is x header?
3:1. It is landscape, so this page starts on Crop to fill, which trims the top and bottom of a taller-shaped original; Fit whole image keeps all of it and pads the sides. Crops are always taken from the centre.
Which file format should I use for an X profile header?
JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
