Why 851 × 315?
Facebook renders page cover photos at 851 x 315 on desktop. Supplying that exact size avoids the automatic upscaling that makes a cover look soft. Facebook's help page for Page covers says the file must be at least 400 pixels wide and 150 tall, and that it loads fastest as an sRGB JPG of 851 × 315 under 100 kilobytes. That shape is a 2.7:1 strip, so this page opens with Crop to fill, which keeps the centre of the picture. A 4032 × 3024 phone photo is scaled to 851 × 638 and loses about 162 pixels from the top and the bottom, keeping just under half its height. A 1920 × 1080 frame keeps about two thirds, with 82 pixels trimmed at each of those edges, and an existing 1500 × 500 X header loses only 47 pixels from either side.
Before you upload
Mobile crops the sides of a cover photo. Keep logos and text near the centre so nothing important is lost. The same help page says the cover is left-aligned, that your profile picture partly covers its left side, and that on phones the frame becomes 2.4:1, with the profile picture overlapping the cover by about 40 pixels. At 315 pixels tall a 2.4:1 view is roughly 756 pixels wide, about 95 fewer than this canvas. For a cover built from a logo or lettering, Facebook suggests a PNG may look better; PNG ignores the quality setting, so compare its size with a JPG. If a JPG at the default quality of 82 shows more than 100 KB in the result line, lower the quality and resize again. A 400 × 150 image meets the minimum but is enlarged about 2.1 times here with no warning. The background colour fills transparent parts of a PNG logo whichever output format you choose, and cover.png downloads as cover-social.jpg without the camera details of the original.
Source and verification
Facebook's Page cover guidance is the primary reference. The 851 by 315 canvas is a practical desktop choice, and the visible crop still varies by device. Check the Facebook Help Center guidance ↗.

Frequently asked questions
What size is facebook cover photo?
851 × 315 pixels, an aspect ratio of 2.7:1. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.
What aspect ratio is facebook cover photo?
2.7:1. It is landscape, so this page starts on Crop to fill, which trims the top and bottom of a taller-shaped original; Fit whole image keeps all of it and pads the sides. Crops are always taken from the centre.
Which file format should I use for a Facebook page cover photo?
JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
