Why 1584 × 396?
LinkedIn profile banners are 1584 x 396, a wide 4:1 strip. Exporting at that size prevents the blur that comes from upscaling a smaller image. That shape is extreme for a photograph. With Crop to fill, the default here, a 4032 × 3024 phone photo is scaled to 1584 × 1188 and keeps only its middle third, because 396 pixels are cut from the top and another 396 from the bottom. A 16:9 frame at 1920 × 1080 keeps a little under half of its height. An existing 1500 × 500 X header is the closest ready-made match: it is enlarged by about 6 per cent and trimmed by 66 pixels at the top and bottom, so one banner design can serve both profiles.
Before you upload
Your profile photo covers the lower left on desktop and the layout shifts on mobile, so keep the centre and right clear. LinkedIn accepts JPG or PNG cover images under 8 MB, so pick one of those two formats here rather than WebP. The crop on this page is centred and cannot be moved, but LinkedIn's own editor can still reposition, resize and crop the cover image after upload. Fit whole image keeps that 1500 × 500 header intact at 1188 × 396, with bands about 198 pixels wide on the left and right; choose a background colour that matches the edges of the artwork so the bands look intentional. If LinkedIn shows the banner blurry or pixelated, its help suggests using a larger file, so raise the JPG quality above the default of 82 or switch to PNG for a banner made mostly of text and logos.
Source and verification
LinkedIn explicitly recommends 1584 by 396 pixels for a profile cover image. Check the LinkedIn Help guidance ↗.

Frequently asked questions
What size is linkedin banner?
1584 × 396 pixels, an aspect ratio of 4:1. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.
What aspect ratio is linkedin banner?
4:1. It is landscape, so this page starts on Crop to fill, which trims the top and bottom of a taller-shaped original; Fit whole image keeps all of it and pads the sides. Crops are always taken from the centre.
Which file format should I use for a LinkedIn profile banner?
JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
