Why 1200 × 630?

1200 x 630 is the standard landscape ratio Facebook uses for shared images and link previews, and the same size Open Graph tags expect. Meta's sharing documentation asks for at least 1200 × 630 for the best display on high-resolution screens and treats 600 × 315 as the floor for the larger link-preview layout. It sets 200 × 200 as the smallest allowed image and 8 MB as the largest file. Meta also says staying close to 1.91:1 shows the whole picture in Feed without cropping. Landscape frames default to Crop to fill here. A 3000 × 2000 camera photo is scaled to 1200 × 800 and loses 85 pixels from the top and bottom, while a 3024 × 4032 portrait phone photo keeps only the central 39 per cent of its height.

Before you upload

This is also the safest size for an og:image, so the same export works for link previews across most platforms. Facebook caches every og:image by its URL, so when you replace a preview, publish the new file at a new address instead of overwriting the old one, and leave the old image online for earlier shares. Running the page URL through Meta's Sharing Debugger pre-fetches it and can refresh the picture, and og:image:width and og:image:height tags set to 1200 and 630 let the crawler render the very first share immediately. The download name changes too: og-card.png becomes og-card-social.jpg while JPG is selected. A 2400 × 1260 master halves to this size with nothing trimmed, but an old 600 × 315 card is doubled with no warning and its lettering turns soft. Fitting a square 1080 × 1080 logo whole leaves it 630 pixels tall with 285-pixel side bands in the background colour, which also replaces any transparency in PNG and WebP output. At the default quality of 82 the JPG stays far below 8 MB, and a photo's camera details are not carried over.

Source and verification

Meta's sharing guidance uses the 1.91:1 Open Graph shape for large link previews; 1200 by 630 is the practical canvas used here. Check the Meta Sharing documentation guidance ↗.

Frequently asked questions

What size is facebook post?

1200 × 630 pixels, an aspect ratio of 1.9:1. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.

What aspect ratio is facebook post?

1.9:1. It is landscape, so this page starts on Crop to fill, which trims the top and bottom of a taller-shaped original; Fit whole image keeps all of it and pads the sides. Crops are always taken from the centre.

Which file format should I use for a Facebook post or link preview?

JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
