Why 400 × 400?

X shows profile photos as a circle at many sizes, from the timeline to the profile page. A 400 × 400 square is a practical working canvas for that circular avatar, and it is the size X Help recommends, though not a hard pixel requirement. X caps profile photos at 2 MB in JPG, GIF or PNG. Because the frame is square, this page opens on Fit whole image. A 4032 × 3024 landscape photo shrinks to 400 × 300 with 50-pixel bands above and below, which show as slivers at the top and bottom of the circle. Crop to fill scales it to about 533 × 400 instead and trims about 67 pixels from each side, always from the centre, so an off-centre face should be cropped first with the crop tool.

Before you upload

Keep the face or mark in the centre. A 400-pixel source can look soft on a high-density screen; if you have a larger original, export 400 × 400 here only after you are happy with the crop, or use the generic resizer for a larger square first. Next to posts the avatar is shown far smaller than 400 pixels, so a face that fills most of the frame reads better than a full-length shot, and a logo with small lettering can turn illegible. WebP is not among the formats X lists for profile photos, so keep JPG or choose PNG for a flat logo; either is far below the 2 MB cap at this size. X also lists GIF, which this page cannot produce. The background colour fills fitted bands and transparent parts of a PNG logo, so pick your brand colour rather than the default white if the mark normally sits on colour. The header is a separate 1500 × 500 image with its own size page. avatar.png downloads as avatar-social.jpg.

Source and verification

X Help covers profile-photo uploads and header cropping, giving 400 by 400 pixels as the recommended profile image size and 2 MB as the profile photo limit. The square is used here as a practical canvas for the circular avatar, not a hard requirement. Check the X Help Center guidance ↗.

Frequently asked questions

What size is x profile photo?

400 × 400 pixels, an aspect ratio of 1:1. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.

What aspect ratio is x profile photo?

1:1. It is square, so a landscape or portrait original needs cropping or padding. This page starts on Fit whole image, which pads it with the background colour; Crop to fill trims the longer sides instead. Crops are always taken from the centre.

Which file format should I use for an X (Twitter) profile photo?

JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
