Why 640 × 640?
WhatsApp Help says a profile picture should be at least 192 pixels on each side, because uploads are compressed and a smaller image comes out looking low quality. A 640 × 640 square is a practical working canvas: large enough to stay sharp in the circle crop, small enough that WhatsApp is not starting from a 12-megapixel original. Because the frame is square, this page opens on Fit whole image. A 4032 × 3024 landscape phone photo shrinks to 640 × 480 with 80-pixel bands of background colour above and below, and the circle still shows them as curved slivers at its top and bottom. Crop to fill removes them: the same photo is scaled to about 853 × 640 and loses roughly 107 pixels from each side, always from the centre. A 3024 × 4032 portrait selfie loses the same amount from its top and bottom instead, so a head close to the upper edge can lose its crown.
Before you upload
WhatsApp displays profile photos as circles in chats and contact lists. Keep the face or logo in the centre, with a margin all round, because the corners of the square never show. In the chat list the picture is a small thumbnail, so a face that fills most of the frame is easier to recognise than a full-length or group shot. HD media is not currently available for profile pictures, so WhatsApp will still compress the upload whichever quality option you normally use for chats. JPG at the default quality of 82 is the sensible export for a photo; for a business logo with thin lines or small lettering, PNG gives that second compression a cleaner start. The background colour fills the bands and any transparent areas of a PNG logo, so match it to the logo's own backdrop rather than leaving white. An old 150 × 150 avatar is below the 192-pixel suggestion, and this page enlarges it to 640 × 640 without any warning, which cannot add detail; find a larger original instead. Who sees the picture is set under Settings, then Privacy, then Profile photo: Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except… or Nobody. avatar.jpg downloads as avatar-social.jpg, without the camera details stored in the original.
Source and verification
WhatsApp Help says profile pictures should be at least 192 pixels in height and width. The 640 by 640 square is an Image Cosmos practical canvas, not an exact size prescribed by that page. Check the WhatsApp Help Center guidance ↗.

Frequently asked questions
What size is whatsapp profile picture?
640 × 640 pixels, an aspect ratio of 1:1. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.
What aspect ratio is whatsapp profile picture?
1:1. It is square, so a landscape or portrait original needs cropping or padding. This page starts on Fit whole image, which pads it with the background colour; Crop to fill trims the longer sides instead. Crops are always taken from the centre.
Which file format should I use for a WhatsApp profile picture?
JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
