Why 1200 × 480?
Twitch Help recommends 1200 x 480 pixels for a profile banner, a 5:2 strip across the top of the channel page. Twitch scales the page, and the banner with it, to the width of each viewer's browser window: an image shorter or taller than 480 pixels is scaled to 480 high, and on a window wider than the image the banner is stretched. Twitch's own advice is to make the image as wide as possible and concentrate the graphics on the left, so keep the channel name and logo in the left part of the design rather than the middle. As a landscape canvas, this page opens on Crop to fill, which always crops from the centre. A 1920 × 1080 stream screenshot becomes 1200 × 675 and loses about 98 pixels from the top and the bottom, keeping roughly 71 per cent of its height, while a 4032 × 3024 phone photo becomes 1200 × 900 and keeps only the middle 53 per cent.
Before you upload
Upload it in the Creator Dashboard under Settings, then Channel, then the Brand tab, where Profile Banner has an Update button. Twitch takes JPEG, PNG or GIF up to 10 MB. WebP is not on that list, so choose JPG or PNG here; a 1200 × 480 JPG at the default quality of 82 lands far below the limit. Animated GIF banners are outside what this page does, because it only accepts JPG, PNG or WebP and always saves a still image. A square 1080 × 1080 logo fitted whole shrinks to 480 × 480 and sits in the middle between bands 360 pixels wide, which works against Twitch's left-heavy advice, so build the banner in a design app with the logo on the left, then use this page only to set the exact size. If your artwork is already 480 pixels high and much wider than 1200, uploading it unchanged may suit wide monitors better, because Twitch stretches a banner only when the window is wider than the image. banner.png downloads as banner-social.jpg.

Frequently asked questions
What size is twitch profile banner?
1200 × 480 pixels, an aspect ratio of 5:2. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.
What aspect ratio is twitch profile banner?
5:2. It is landscape, so this page starts on Crop to fill, which trims the top and bottom of a taller-shaped original; Fit whole image keeps all of it and pads the sides. Crops are always taken from the centre.
Which file format should I use for a Twitch profile banner?
JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
