Why 1080 × 1350?

Threads image posts accept JPEG or PNG up to 8 MB with width between 320 and 1440. 1080 × 1350 is a practical 4:5 portrait that uses more feed height than a square without exceeding the documented width ceiling. The Threads API documentation adds that an upload narrower than 320 pixels is scaled up to that minimum, a wider one than 1440 is scaled down, and the shape may be as extreme as 10:1. At 1080 wide this canvas falls inside both width limits, so neither scaling rule applies to it. Because the frame is portrait, this page opens with Fit whole image. A 4032 × 3024 landscape phone photo shrinks to 1080 × 810 and sits between bands of background colour 270 pixels deep, while Crop to fill would scale it to 1800 × 1350 and remove 360 pixels from each side, keeping 60 per cent of the width.

Before you upload

Taller than 4:5 can be cropped in the feed preview. JPG is the safer upload; WebP support varies by client. This is not an official exact Threads canvas. Screenshots of other posts are far taller than this frame. A 1170 × 2532 phone screenshot fitted whole becomes about 624 × 1350 with roughly 228 pixels of padding down each side, whereas Crop to fill keeps only the middle 58 per cent of its height, taken from the exact centre, and can slice off the first and last lines of text. That padding colour is painted behind JPG, PNG and WebP output alike, so choose white for a light-mode screenshot or a near-black for a dark one. Threads converts images in other colour spaces to sRGB. A carousel holds between 2 and 20 items, so resize every slide here with the same fit and colour. Anything under 1080 pixels wide is enlarged silently: a 720 × 900 image is stretched 1.5 times. A phone photo's location tags and camera details are not copied into the download, and thread.png downloads as thread-social.jpg at quality 82, far below the 8 MB cap.

Source and verification

Threads documents JPEG or PNG posts up to 8 MB with width 320 to 1440. The 1080 by 1350 4:5 canvas is an Image Cosmos practical choice, not a hard requirement. Check the Threads API documentation guidance ↗.

Frequently asked questions

What size is threads post?

1080 × 1350 pixels, an aspect ratio of 4:5. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.

What aspect ratio is threads post?

4:5. It is portrait, so this page starts on Fit whole image, which keeps a wider-shaped original whole and pads above and below it; Crop to fill trims its sides instead. Crops are always taken from the centre.

Which file format should I use for a Threads image post?

JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
