Why 2048 × 2048?
Shopify's help pages say a 2048 x 2048 square usually displays best for product photos, and this page outputs exactly that. Shopify accepts product images up to 5000 × 5000 pixels, or 25 megapixels, as long as each file is under 20 MB, then creates smaller versions for the different parts of your theme, so one large square serves both the zoomed product view and the collection grid. Because the frame is square, this page opens on Fit whole image. A 4032 × 3024 landscape phone photo becomes 2048 × 1536 with a 256-pixel band of background colour above and below, and a 3024 × 4032 portrait shot becomes 1536 × 2048 with the bands at its sides. Crop to fill instead scales the landscape photo to about 2731 × 2048 and trims about 341 pixels from each side, always from the centre.
Before you upload
Shopify recommends a consistent aspect ratio for the main image of every product, because collection pages show them side by side and mixed shapes look uneven. Resize every main photo here with the same fit and the same background colour so the grid lines up. That colour also fills transparent areas, so a cut-out product saved as a transparent PNG comes back on a solid background; skip this page if your theme relies on transparency. Shopify names PNG as the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG, and serves each image in whatever format suits the shopper's browser, so the JPG default at quality 82 is a sensible start for photographs, while PNG suits flat artwork.
