Why 400 × 400?
LinkedIn Help says a profile photo must be between 400 × 400 and 7680 × 4320 pixels, PNG or JPG, and at most 8 MB. This page exports the official minimum square so a small source still meets the floor. LinkedIn shows the photo in a circle, so the corners of the square are never seen. Because the frame is square, this page opens on Fit whole image. A 3024 × 4032 portrait phone photo shrinks to 300 × 400 with 50-pixel bands of background colour at each side, and those bands still show as slivers at the left and right of the circle. Crop to fill avoids them: the same photo is scaled to 400 × 533 and loses about 67 pixels from the top and the bottom, always from the centre, so a head placed high in the frame can lose its crown. Crop the original around head and shoulders first with the crop tool, then resize it here.
Before you upload
LinkedIn displays the photo as a circle. Keep the face centred with space around the head. If you have a larger sharp original, 800 × 800 from the generic resizer is a reasonable sharper upload; this page is the 400-pixel minimum canvas. LinkedIn lists only PNG and JPG and does not support GIF, so leave the format on JPG or pick PNG rather than WebP. At 400 × 400 a JPG at the default quality of 82 is a tiny fraction of the 8 MB cap. LinkedIn also recommends a photo that will not need much cropping, and lets you adjust it after upload. An old 200 × 200 avatar is enlarged to 400 × 400 without any warning, which clears the minimum but looks soft. The photo must reflect your likeness, though LinkedIn allows an illustration of yourself. The background colour fills the bands and any transparent areas of a PNG, so match it to your backdrop. headshot.jpg downloads as headshot-social.jpg, without the camera details stored in the original.
Source and verification
LinkedIn Help says profile photos must be between 400 by 400 and 7680 by 4320 pixels. The 400-pixel square is a practical Image Cosmos canvas at the official minimum, not a requirement to upload only that size. Check the LinkedIn Help guidance ↗.

Frequently asked questions
What size is linkedin profile photo?
400 × 400 pixels, an aspect ratio of 1:1. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.
What aspect ratio is linkedin profile photo?
1:1. It is square, so a landscape or portrait original needs cropping or padding. This page starts on Fit whole image, which pads it with the background colour; Crop to fill trims the longer sides instead. Crops are always taken from the centre.
Which file format should I use for a LinkedIn profile photo?
JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
