Why 1600 × 1600?
eBay's picture policy requires at least one photo of 500 pixels or more on the longest side, and its photo tips recommend about 1600 x 1600, accept files up to 12 MB and say 1:1 or 16:9 photos look best in listings and search results. This square follows that recommendation, but it is not a hard requirement for every listing. The page opens on Fit whole image, so a 4032 × 3024 photo becomes 1600 × 1200 with bands of 200 pixels above and below, and a portrait phone photo gets the bands at its sides. Crop to fill covers the square instead by trimming about 267 pixels from each side of the landscape shot.
Before you upload
eBay allows up to 24 photos per listing. Consistent square crops make the gallery easier to scan. The first photo is the main one shown beside the title in search results, so give it the cleanest framing. The same policy bans added borders, added text or artwork, and watermarks of any kind. Bands from Fit whole image can read as a border when their colour differs from the photo, so either shoot the item against white and keep the default #ffffff fill, which blends into the backdrop, or switch to Crop to fill when the edges of the frame hold nothing important. Small sources are enlarged silently: a 640 × 480 picture is stretched 2.5 times to reach the full width and looks soft, even though it already passes the 500-pixel minimum on its own. Stock or catalogue photos are not allowed for used items, so photograph the actual item. A JPG at the default quality of 82 lands far below the 12 MB cap, listing.jpg downloads as listing-social.jpg, and the redrawn file carries none of the camera details stored in the original.
Source and verification
eBay requires at least 500 pixels on the longest side; 1600 square is a practical high-resolution canvas rather than a hard requirement. Check the eBay Picture Policy guidance ↗.

Frequently asked questions
What size is ebay listing image?
1600 × 1600 pixels, an aspect ratio of 1:1. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.
What aspect ratio is ebay listing image?
1:1. It is square, so a landscape or portrait original needs cropping or padding. This page starts on Fit whole image, which pads it with the background colour; Crop to fill trims the longer sides instead. Crops are always taken from the centre.
Which file format should I use for an eBay listing photo?
JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
