Why 2000 × 2000?
Amazon's current seller guidance asks for at least 1000 pixels on the longest side for zoom, describes 1600 pixels or more as optimal, prefers JPEG and also accepts PNG, TIFF and GIF. A 2000 x 2000 square clears all of that with margin. Because the frame is square, this page opens on Fit whole image, which suits Amazon's rule that the main image shows the entire product with nothing cut off. A 4032 × 3024 landscape product photo becomes 2000 × 1500 with a band of 250 pixels above and below, and a 3024 × 4032 portrait photo becomes 1500 × 2000 with the bands at its sides. Crop to fill would instead trim about 333 pixels from each side of that landscape shot, enough to slice the ends off a long product.
Before you upload
Amazon requires the main image to sit on a pure white background. The background colour here starts at #ffffff, exactly the RGB 255, 255, 255 white Amazon names, and it fills the bands in every format. It only fills the space around the photo: a product shot on a grey table keeps its grey table, because this tool does not cut products out. Amazon also wants the product to fill 85 to 100 per cent of the frame, so when the item sits small in a wide shot, crop the original tightly around it first and then fit it here. Small supplier images are enlarged without any warning: an 800 × 800 file is stretched 2.5 times to 2000 × 2000, which meets the pixel count but adds no detail, so zoom shows a soft picture. Amazon's guidance keeps text, graphics, logos, watermarks and promotional messaging off the main image; the additional image slots are where it suggests showing the product in use, close-up details and size comparisons. Leave the format on JPG, the preferred type: product.png downloads as product-social.jpg.

Frequently asked questions
What size is amazon main image?
2000 × 2000 pixels, an aspect ratio of 1:1. Add an image above and it is resized to exactly that in your browser.
What aspect ratio is amazon main image?
1:1. It is square, so a landscape or portrait original needs cropping or padding. This page starts on Fit whole image, which pads it with the background colour; Crop to fill trims the longer sides instead. Crops are always taken from the centre.
Which file format should I use for an Amazon main product image?
JPG is the safest choice for photographs, and most platforms recompress uploads anyway. Use PNG for crisp flat graphics and text, and WebP when file size matters more than compatibility. No format keeps transparency here, because the resizer paints the background colour, white by default, behind every image.
