How to Sharpen an Image

Sharpening increases contrast between a pixel and its neighbours. It can help a slightly soft resize. It cannot recreate a missed focus or invent a readable licence plate.

How to use this page

  1. Choose an image up to 16 megapixels.
  2. Start on a light or medium strength.
  3. Sharpen, inspect edges for halos, then download at the original size.

Worked example: a product shot that looks soft after a downscale

Resize to the shop width, then apply light sharpening on this page. If you see ringing around chrome edges, drop the strength. Maximum is for stubborn graphics, not portraits.

What this job is for

Sharpen after you have the final pixel dimensions. Doing it before a big downscale wastes the effect and can emphasise noise that then gets scaled.

Useful limits

There is no generative model on this site. Strong settings exaggerate JPEG blocks and skin texture.

The live tool behind this page is Sharpen Image. It is the same local engine as the rest of Image Cosmos.

Frequently asked questions

Is this AI upscaling?

No. It is a 3×3 edge kernel.

Why is there a 16 MP limit?
