How to Crop an Image

Cropping throws away pixels outside a rectangle. Use it to remove desk clutter, change a composition, or cut a face-and-shoulders box before a portal upload.

How to use this page

  1. Choose an image and read its width and height in the original panel.
  2. Set X from the left and Y from the top, then the crop width and height in pixels.
  3. Crop, check the preview, and download. Coordinates start at zero.

Worked example: a 400 × 400 face crop from a 1600 × 1200 photo

If the face sits near the centre, try X 600, Y 200, width 400, height 400, then adjust. For a social square it is often easier to use a platform size page with crop-to-fill once you know the subject is centred.

What this job is for

A crop that runs past the image edge is clamped to the real pixels. The tool will not invent a border.

Useful limits

Crop does not change resolution of the remaining area. To make the crop larger or smaller as a whole image, resize the cropped download.

The live tool behind this page is Image Cropper. It is the same local engine as the rest of Image Cosmos.
