How to Pixelate an Image

Pixelation samples the image down and scales it up without smoothing so you see colour blocks. Use it for a retro look or an obviously altered draft.

How to use this page

  1. Choose an image.
  2. Set the block size. Larger blocks hide more detail.
  3. Pixelate the whole frame, preview, and download at the original dimensions.

Worked example: a mosaic background from a busy street photo

Use a large block size so the scene becomes colour tiles, then place type on top in your layout tool. Do not publish this as a redacted evidence photo.

What this job is for

This is not a selection brush. Crop first if only part of the frame should be in play. Small blocks can leave shapes easy to guess.

Useful limits

If you wanted a smooth wash, use blur instead.

The live tool behind this page is Pixelate Image. It is the same local engine as the rest of Image Cosmos.
