How to Convert JPG to WebP

WebP is meant for delivery, not as your only master. Convert a JPG when the page will be served to modern browsers and you want a smaller file than the original JPG.

How to use this page

  1. Choose a JPG image.
  2. Set WebP quality (around 80 is a reasonable first look).
  3. Convert, compare the preview and the new file size, then download.

Worked example: a 1.8 MB JPG hero that should be a WebP

Resize the JPG to the hero width first, then convert to WebP at quality 75–85. Check the byte size. If a CMS still wants JPG, skip WebP and compress the resized JPG instead.

What this job is for

Keep the JPG (or the camera original) as the archive. If you need to edit later, edit the master and export a fresh WebP.

Useful limits

WebP is not an excuse to skip resizing. A 6000-pixel WebP is still a large download.

The live tool behind this page is JPG to WebP. It is the same local engine as the rest of Image Cosmos.

Will every browser show WebP?
