Compress an Image for Gmail

Gmail counts the whole message, including previous replies, the signature and every attachment. Google’s Gmail help states a 25 MB attachment limit for the message. One 8 MB camera photo can sit under that cap and still make a thread painful. The reliable path is: crop if needed, resize, then compress.

How to use this page

  1. Resize each camera original to about 1200–1600 pixels wide unless the recipient asked for more.
  2. Compress each photo to 100 KB when you are sending several, or 200 KB for a single attachment.
  3. Check the real size, attach the downloads in Gmail, and keep the originals out of the sent mail.

Worked example: four listing photos in one Gmail draft

Resize each master to 1600 pixels wide, compress each to 100 KB as JPG, and attach the four downloads. Four 100 KB files plus a short message stay far under 25 MB. If Gmail still warns about size, the thread history or a previous video is the usual cause — start a new message.

What this job is for

Do not rely on Gmail’s image compression as your only step if a school or HR portal is the real destination — those hosts often re-download what you sent and apply their own cap. Inline images in HTML signatures are often shown around 600 pixels wide; see the email header size page for a 600 × 200 banner.

Useful limits

This is not a Gmail add-on. Image Cosmos does not send mail and does not see the attachment. For a multi-page PDF of the same photos, compress each image, then build the PDF on PDF North locally.

The live tool behind this page is Image Compressor. It is the same local engine as the rest of Image Cosmos.

Frequently asked questions

What is Gmail’s attachment limit?

Google’s Gmail help states 25 MB for attachments on a message. That is the whole payload, not 25 MB per photo in isolation.

Why did a 10 MB total still bounce?

Quoted replies, signatures and other attachments count. Drive links are a better path for large originals.

Does Image Cosmos email Gmail for me?

No. You attach the local download.

Need a PDF attachment instead?

Create it on PDF North after you have the rasters you want.
