Compress an Image for a Website

Web performance is mostly the right pixels, then a compact encode. Compressing a 6000-pixel original to 80% quality and dropping it in a 360-pixel column is the expensive mistake.

How to use this page

  1. Read the layout width (and 2× if you serve retina).
  2. Resize the master to that pixel width.
  3. Convert to WebP or compress as JPG, then check bytes against your budget.

Worked example: a 720-pixel column on a marketing page

Resize to 1440 pixels wide for 2×, convert to WebP around quality 80, and confirm the file is in the low hundreds of KB. If the CMS rejects WebP, compress the 1440-pixel JPG instead. Keep the camera RAW or original JPG offline.

What this job is for

A content photo can often live at 80–200 KB. A hero might need more. A grid of twenty products cannot all be 500 KB if you care about phones.

Useful limits

This site is not a CDN and does not generate srcset automatically. You download files and place them in your own hosting.

The live tool behind this page is Image Compressor. It is the same local engine as the rest of Image Cosmos.
