Worked example: a catalogue tile from a landscape photo
A 1600 × 1000 product shot will lose left and right if you crop to 800 × 800. Check that the product stays complete. If it does not, fit the whole image on a white square instead, then compress if the catalogue also has a KB limit.
What this job is for
Squares punish off-centre subjects. Crop-to-fill is usually right for a product or face. Fit-the-whole-image is safer for a complete object that must not lose a handle, label or ear.
Useful limits
Marketplace channels that want 2000-pixel squares should use those size pages or the marketplace pack, not this 800-pixel export as the master.
The live tool behind this page is Image Resizer. It is the same local engine as the rest of Image Cosmos.
Frequently asked questions
When is 800 × 800 enough?
For a small web tile or a draft mock. Not for Amazon or Etsy zoom views.
JPG or PNG for a square tile?
JPG for photographs. PNG when you need a transparent or very sharp graphic.
Is this processed on a server?
No. The square is created locally.
