How to use this page
- Choose a HEIC or HEIF photo, or a JPG, PNG or WebP if you already exported one.
- Convert it locally to WebP. If this browser cannot read HEIC itself, a decoder loads in the page.
- Preview the result and download. Nothing is uploaded to Image Cosmos.
Worked example: an iPhone HEIC hero that should ship as WebP
Choose the .HEIC file, set WebP quality around 75–85, convert, and check the preview size. If the page also needs a max width, resize the WebP afterwards, or convert to JPG, resize, then convert to WebP. The same file can be decoded in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. If one file still fails, export JPG from the phone first.
What this job is for
Safari usually reads HEIC itself. Chrome, Edge and Firefox load a decoder in this page when they do not. If a file still fails, export a JPG from Photos and finish on the JPG-to-WebP page. The photo is never uploaded.
Useful limits
WebP is a delivery format, not your only master. Keep the HEIC in Photos if you still have it. A WebP copy will not restore HEIC depth or edit history. Colour can shift slightly between decoders. This site does not encode AVIF, GIF or BMP.
The live tool behind this page is JPG to WebP. HEIC is decoded in this browser. A local decoder loads only when the browser cannot read HEIC itself.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my HEIC fail to open?
That file could not be decoded in this browser. It was not uploaded. Export a JPG from Photos, then use JPG to WebP, if the decoder reports an unsupported HEIC.
Is WebP always smaller than a HEIC-to-JPG copy?
Often, not always. Compare the actual download size at the same canvas.
Does a failed HEIC get uploaded for conversion?
No. There is no fallback upload.
