How to use Blur Image

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image.
  2. Set a blur radius from subtle softening to a strong whole-image blur.
  3. Blur the image, review the preview and download the result.

Useful to know

This tool blurs the entire image, not selected faces or regions. Keep the original because blur permanently removes visible detail from the downloaded copy.

Blur an entire image online

This tool applies an even blur across every visible part of a JPG, PNG or WebP image. It is useful when you need a soft background for text, a less distracting presentation slide, an abstract colour layer, a mood effect or a deliberately softened preview. The result keeps the original pixel dimensions, so it can replace the source in a layout without changing the canvas size.

Choose the blur radius

The radius controls how far neighbouring colours spread into one another. A value around 2–5 pixels gives light softening, while 8–15 pixels makes detail noticeably less distinct. Higher settings create a strong wash of colour. The same radius looks different on a small icon and a large camera photo, so use the result preview instead of assuming one setting suits every image.

Blur is destructive in the downloaded copy: once pixels are blended, sharpening cannot reliably reconstruct the original detail. Keep the source file as your master. If you need a smaller canvas as well, use the image resizer before blurring so the radius is judged against the final dimensions.

Blur versus pixelate

Blur blends nearby colours into smooth transitions. Pixelation groups detail into hard-edged blocks. Choose blur for backgrounds and softer creative treatments. Use the pixelate image tool for a blocky retro look or when you want the alteration to be deliberately obvious.

Privacy and redaction limitations

The image is decoded, blurred and exported inside your browser. Image Cosmos does not upload the selected file to its server. However, whole-image blur is a visual treatment rather than certified redaction. Low blur settings can leave text, faces or objects recognisable, and hidden information can remain in the visible context. Do not rely on this tool for legal, medical or security-sensitive anonymisation.

Choose JPG, PNG or WebP output

JPG is practical for photographs but replaces transparent areas with the selected background. PNG preserves transparency and sharp edges outside the effect, although its files can be larger. WebP is useful for modern web pages. Quality affects JPG and WebP encoding; it does not change the chosen blur radius. Review the output dimensions and file size before downloading, then use the image compressor if a later upload has a strict KB limit.
